19-Year-Old Detroit Man Ordered To Trial In Attempted Rape Case

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 19-year-old Detroit man has been ordered to stand trial in the stabbing and attempted rape of a woman in her east side Detroit home.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office said Darian Winfield was arraigned Tuesday on assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and home invasion charges.

The victim testified during a district court hearing that she used a stun gun to escape the Dec. 30 attack.

After being hit and stabbed in the chest while fighting him off,  the 39-year-old woman said that she'd recognized Winfield as being from the neighborhood, telling him:  "I know you, you're a kid, you're a boy."

She told the court how she tricked him, saying she wanted to be sure her daughter wasn't home, which allowed her to reach for her stun gun on her attacker. She could "smell something burning," she said, after she "lit him up."

This allowed her to run across the street to her sisters' house — all while a knife was still lodged in her chest.

Police said tips led to Winfield's arrest Jan. 8 after a sketch of a suspected serial rapist was released to the media.

Held on a $1 million bond, Winfield faces a hearing next Monday on assault with intent to murder charges in a Dec. 15 knife attack on a woman in Grosse Pointe Park.

Prosecutors have said he's also a person of interest in the beating and rape of a 17-year-old girl in her home on the same street where the 39-year-old victim was attacked. The teen later died of her injuries.
