Flint Councilman Agrees To Fine In Disorderly Conduct Case

FLINT, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A Flint City Councilman who served 22 days for impaired driving has avoided more jail time for misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

The Flint Journal reports that Eric Mays and prosecutors announced Thursday that Mays would pay a $200 fine instead of spending up to 90 days in jail.

A jury found him guilty in February.

Mays had contended that the case against him was politically motivated. It stemmed from his removal by police from a July council meeting.

Mays was convicted in November in the impaired driving case after representing himself. He's a well-known activist in Flint, especially during the city's crisis with lead-tainted water.

Mays served a year of probation after pleading guilty in 1987 to felonious assault, after threatening a man with a gun. Mays said the man threatened his life.
