1 Man Dead, Another Critical After Hartland Township Crash

HARTLAND TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a three-vehicle crash in Livingston County Friday morning.

It happened shortly before 6 a.m. along Clyde Road near Cullen Road in Hartland Township.

The crash involved a car, an SUV and a pickup truck, according Michigan State Police with the Brighton Post.

Police said a Chevy Impala was traveling west on Clyde followed by a white Chevy pickup truck, while a white Ford Explorer was traveling east when the accident occurred.

It's not clear at this time exactly what cause the crash, but people who live in the area said it was so violent that it sounded like an explosion.

When EMS arrived on the scene the pickup was engulfed in flames, police said. The driver of that truck, a 41-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Explorer — a 28-year-old man —was taken to University of Michigan Hospital, police said, where he was listed in critical condition. The third driver, a 25-year-old man in the Impala, was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Police said they don't know if drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident as an investigation continues.

The road remained closed later into the morning but has since reopened.

Names are being withheld until family members can be notified.
