Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy On Motorcycle Injured In Crash

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Authorities say an Oakland County Sheriff's deputy is hospitalized after he was struck by an SUV while riding a motorcycle.

The incident happened just before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday near Newton and Richardson roads in Commerce Township.

Authorities say the deputy was on-duty, traveling northbound on Newton Road whena white GMC SUV failed to yield and turned left in front of him, heading east on Richardson Road.

The deputy, 46, avoided hitting the SUV by laying his motorcycle down in the intersection, according to police, which caused him to be ejected from the bike.

Police say the deputy, a 20-year police veteran, was on his way to training when the accident occurred. He was transported to Botsford Hospital with injuries to his eye, face, leg and hands, and is currently listed in serious but stable condition.

The other driver, a 61-year-old Commerce Township woman, stopped at the scene and was questioned by police. She was uninjured.

The crash remains under investigation.
