Inspections To Completely Close Parts Of I-696 This Weekend

OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) -- Motorists beware: inspections on I-696 will completely shut down parts of the freeway this weekend.

Westbound I-696 will be closed between Coolidge and Greenfield from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, while the eastbound side will be closed on Sunday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Diane Cross with the Michigan Department of Transportation says M-DOT workers need to inspect the bridge plaza superstructure supporting the plaza over I-696 at Church St., and that means no vehicular traffic underneath.

"They just want to check out that the bridge is obviously safe, if we had any concern we truly would close it," Cross told WWJ Newsradio 950. "They do want to do a thorough inspection and that does require the closure because we can't have any traffic going underneath."

Cross says eastbound I-696 traffic will be forced off on Greenfield.
